JOSEPH BENJAMIN JOINS THE CAST OF MUM, DAD, MEET SAM

JOESPH BENJAMIN

OKP PRODUCTIONS in association with RUKI LONDON bring you a New British/Nigerian Romantic Comedy starring the highly acclaimed JOSEPH BENJAMIN (Tango With Me, Mr and Mrs, Project Fame), the hysterically funny A DOT COMEDIAN (Friday UK, Wild N Out, Crack Me Up) and two favourite Nigerian seasoned veteran actors whom you’re just going to have to eagerly wait for the official announcement to release their identity.

SYNOPSIS
Josiah Abiola (Joseph Benjamin) comes from a wealthy Nigerian family. He graduates from Oxford University, as a Mechanical Engineer and excels in his forte making his family extremely proud. Next stop is to settle down with a nice Nigerian girl who can cook and clean (obviously!), is a Christian and is from a good family (or at least one that his family knows!).
Samantha Smith (actor to be announced very soon!) is stunning and intelligent. Unfortunately however isn’t so great at cooking (except for the occasional beans on toast…and mashed potatoes). She does however have other very admirable qualities – but these don’t matter to Josiah’s family so let’s not dote on them!
Josiah and Samantha meet after a rough night for the both of them and this sparks off a whirlwind romance. They might just be perfect for each other and so of course he, being a gentleman and she, trying so desperately to make this relationship work decide to visit his family and make formal introductions to Sam…. in Nigeria!
You can guess what happens during this trip - what is supposed to be a special occasion turns out to be their worst nightmare.
Throw in a cocktail of a devious ex-girlfriend, an over protective, overdramatic mother, and the fact Sam is…ENGLISH, and you have a recipe for an explosive and disastrous encounter ripe with awkwardness and hilarity.
The Film will be directed by Tony Sebastian Ukpo (Fighter’s Ballad) and is being produced by Segilola Scott (Love Prevails), Edith Nwekenta (Unspoken) and of course Michelle Bello (Flower Girl).

THE GLOBAL VIEWING PARTY TO MARK THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MATCH ON WASHINGTON & MARTIN LUTHER KING Jr

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR DURING HIS SPEECH

Mr Holloway, Hope Opara (President Eko International Film Festival)
Benny Uche of  Public Affairs US Consulate,Dr Joe Okie-Odumaki,(President Campaign for Democracy)

On Monday August 26th, 2013 we were at the Public Affairs Section of the US Consulate General in Lagos Nigeria for the global viewing party to mark the 50th anniversary of “The March” in Washington &   Martin Luther King Jr "I have a DREAM" speech. It was a wonderful experience to see the passion of the black community in the US including very few white Americans who also participated during that memorable freedom march.
Martin Luther King Jr made the special Dream speech which changed the face of democratic events in the US from that very day.
Our own Dr Joe Okei - Odumaki, President of Campaign for Democracy responded after the screening of that documentary and used that to reflect on her struggle over the  years for a better Nigeria and human rights including the right of women which was addressed by others that spoke during the Q & A.

MOVIEMAKERS BEG BANKS FOR CASH AS NOLLYWOOD GOES GLOBAL

By Chris Kay & Chris Spillane
`Arty' Nigerian Films Put Nollywood on World Stage
Obi Emelonye had to battle Lagos airport bureaucrats, indifferent banks and skeptical peers to release his plane-crash thriller, a movie production on a scale rarely seen in Nigeria’s film industry.

A man walks past the entrance of the Nigerian film market in Lagos. In 13 years, Nollywood has grown into an $800-million-a-year industry that employs thousands of people. Photographer: Pius

“The biggest challenge was negotiating the diplomatic nightmare, potholes, even land-mines -- taking over 100 people every day and passing them through security to go air-side with technical equipment,” the writer-director-producer says in an interview in London, after flying in from the Seattle International Film Festival.“Every day we came, it was another story and I had to throw some money on the table usually to allow us to be able to shoot.”
Last Flight to Abuja” was the highest-grossing West African film last year, taking in $350,000, with premieres in cinemas from London to Lagos.
It cost $250,000 to make, more than six times the typical budget in an industry known for shoddy shoots, poor production and filmmakers churning out features en masse to a nation of more than 160 million people, Africa’s most populous.

Emelonye is trying to avoid being another nobody whose movies go straight to DVD. The 46-year-old is making better-quality movies as he tries to attract a global audience to Nollywood, which like Bollywood, is a play on Hollywood.

Nigeria’s film industry is the second largest in the world by films made and generates about $800 million a year in revenue, according to London and Lagos-based distributor iROKO Partners Ltd.
Greed, Conflicts

Nigeria started producing movies in the 1960s, though modern Nollywood started with Kenneth Nnebue’s 1992 drama “Living in Bondage” establishing the themes of marital discord, greed and conflicts between Christianity and traditional faiths.
The West African nation made an average of 1,093 films a year between 2005 and 2009, second only to India’s 1,178 movies, according to the UNESCO Institute for Statistics.

A typical Nollywood film has a budget of $40,000, the largest producers make 20 to 40 titles a year and an average movie sells 50,000 copies, according to iROKO Partners, which distributes DVDs in Africa and streams videos for international subscribers online using a similar model to Netflix Inc. (NFLX)

This year will see the release of an adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel “Half of a Yellow Sun,” the most expensive movie filmed in Nigeria. Set during the country’s civil war in the 1960s, it cost $9 million.
International Stars

Seventy percent of the funding was raised from Nigerian investors with the rest from the U.K. and the British Film Institute.
Directed and written by Nigerian novelist and playwright Biyi Bandele and filmed in the city of Calabar, the film places international actors Chiwetel Ejiofor and Thandie Newton alongside Nollywood stars such as Genevieve Nnaji.

The promotional trailer was the most viewed online among those being screened at the Toronto International Film Festival this year.
“One of the reasons for going to Toronto is to sell the film to distributors,” says Yewande Sadiku, an executive producer on the film and an investment banker at Stanbic IBTC Holding Co. (STANBIC), who helped assemble the financing.
If the movie is a success, it may spur more funding, Sadiku says in an interview at the Federal Palace Hotel overlooking the Lagos lagoon, Nigeria’s commercial capital and home of Nollywood.
‘Piddly’ Money
“Nollywood in size is big, but Nollywood in financial terms is piddly,” she says. “This film demonstrates what is possible.”
There is an appetite for well-made Nigerian films. Yet with a few more than 10 cinemas in the country and a disorderly distribution network, it’s hard for producers to recoup costs on higher-budget films, according to filmmaker Lonzo Nzekwe.

The 38-year-old director of 2010’s “Anchor Baby,” a drama about a Nigerian couple illegally living in the U.S., recouped the $200,000 it cost and made a small profit.

The movie was released in Nigerian, Ghanaian, U.K. and Canadian cinemas and won 12 awards at festivals. The first Nollywood movie available on iTunes is also on Nzekwe’s own video-on-demand website.
“Nigerians are doing well in international film festivals, it’s not about making a movie and going straight to DVD,” Nzekwe says in a phone interview.
Family Support
Getting bank financing is nearly impossible, according to both Emelonye and Nzekwe, who relied on the support of family and friends.
Only a few companies -- such as phone companies MTN Group Ltd. (MTN)Emirates Telecommunications Corp. (ETISALAT), and lenders such as Diamond Bank Plc (DIAMONDB)-- have started sponsoring films and using Nollywood stars to market products.
Nigeria’s government has realized the potential of Nollywood, which employs 200,000 people directly and another million indirectly, according to Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
This year ministers started a three billion naira ($18.7 million) film training plan, while offering more tax relief, she says.
Nollywood needs better distribution of quality DVDs and a clampdown on piracy, according to Adi Nduka-Agwu, head of Africa business development for iROKO.

In response iROKO, which started in 2010, has built an audience of 6 million users across 178 countries with more than 5,000 movies that can be streamed online for about $5 a month.

Patchy Networks
Patchy Internet networks in Africa lead to many people watching DVDs instead of streaming online, Nduka-Agwu says in an interview in Johannesburg.
iROKO started supplying Nollywood DVDs to 150 retail outlets in Johannesburg in June and is looking to expand further in Africa’s biggest economy. The company has had its first request from a distributor to supply to Zimbabwe, she says.
With his next three films, Emelonye is hoping that banks, investors and companies begin to realize Nollywood’s potential.
Emelonye is confident that his movies will soon generate enough box office to persuade banks to back them.
“With that you can raise your standards, get bigger stars from across the world,” he says.
Muse highlights include Mark Beech on books, Jeremy Gerard on U.S. Theater and Amanda Gordon’s Scene Last Night.

How An African 'Princess' Banked $3 Billion In A Country Living On $2 A Day (Angolan President’s Daughter)

LAST DECEMBER Isabel dos Santos commemorated her tenth wedding anniversary to Congolese businessman Sindika Dokolo with a party. Subtlety wasn’t on the menu. She jetted in dozens of friends and relatives from as far as Germany and Brazil, who joined with hundreds of local guests in Angola for three days of lavishness, including a bash at the Fortress of Sao Miguel in the capital city of Luanda and a beachside Sunday brunch on the posh Mussulo peninsula. The invitation, according to one attendee, came in a sleek white box, promising a celebration of “a decade of passion/ a decade of friendship/ a decade worth a hundred years. …”

A decade worth $3 billion is more like it. At 40 Dos Santos is Africa’s only female billionaire, and also the continent’s youngest. She has quickly and systematically garnered significant stakes in Angola’s strategic industries–banking, cement, diamonds and telecom–making her the most influential businessperson in her homeland. More than half of her assets are held in publicly traded Portuguese companies, adding international credibility. When FORBES outed her as a billionaire in January the government disseminated the news as a matter of national pride, living proof that this country of 19 million has arrived.

The real story, however, is how Dos Santos–the oldest daughter of Angolan President José Eduardo dos Santos–acquired her wealth. For the past year FORBES has been tracing Isabel dos Santos’ path to riches, reviewing a score of documents and speaking with dozens of people on the ground. As best as we can trace, every major Angolan investment held by Dos Santos stems either from taking a chunk of a company that wants to do business in the country or from a stroke of the president’s pen that cut her into the action. Her story is a rare window into the same, tragic kleptocratic narrative that grips resource-rich countries around the world.

For President Dos Santos it’s a foolproof way to extract money from his country, while keeping a putative arm’s-length distance away. If the 71-year-old president gets overthrown, he can reclaim the assets from his daughter. If he dies in power, she keeps the loot in the family. Isabel may decide, if she is generous, to share some of it with her seven known half-siblings. Or not. The siblings are known around Angola for despising one another.

How Forbes' Estimate Of Isabel Dos Santos' Fortune Grew From $500M to $3B In Less Than A Year
“It is not possible to justify this wealth, which is shamelessly displayed,” former Angolan prime minister Marcolino Moco tells FORBES. “There is no doubt that it was the father who generated such a fortune.”

Isabel dos Santos declined to speak with FORBES for this article. Her representatives failed to respond to detailed questions sent months ago but last week issued this statement: “Mrs. Isabel dos Santos is an independent business woman, and a private investor representing solely her own interests. Her investments in Angolan and/or in Portuguese companies are transparent and have been conducted through arms-length transactions involving external entities such as reputed banks and law firms.” In turn, the spokesman accuses this article’s coauthor, an Angolan investigative journalist, of being an activist with a political agenda. The Angolan government jailed Marques de Morais in 1999 over a series of articles critical of the regime and has brought new criminal defamation charges against him over his 2011 book, Blood Diamonds: Corruption and Torture in Angola .

Finally, a representative of Mrs. Dos Santos said that any allegations of illegal wealth transfers between her and the government are “groundless and completely absurd.” That could well be. When your father runs the show, and can dictate which national assets are sold and at what price, what’s theft of public resources in one country can be rendered legal with a swipe of the pen.

President José Eduardo dos Santos could not be reached for comment. That is unfortunate, because the Dos Santoses, as Moco notes, have “some explaining to do.”

FOR THREE CENTURIES the Portuguese extracted wealth from this mineral-rich country on Africa’s southwestern coast. Almost immediately after Angola won independence in 1975, various internal factions began battling one another for the right to do the exact same thing. From this chaos, which lasted 27 years, Dos Santos, who had studied oil engineering in Soviet Azerbaijan and served as foreign minister upon independence, eventually emerged as president in 1979. He’s held on to power ever since, making him the planet’s third-longest-serving nonroyal head of state.

The president met his first wife (he’s been married at least twice), Tatiana Kukanova, while a student in Azerbaijan, and his first child–Isabel–was born there. By age 6 Isabel dos Santos was in Angola’s presidential palace, and while the family’s lifestyle wasn’t over-the-top by profligate African dictator standards (save the president’s dalliances–at least five of his children are from various mistresses), the family had Christmas trees flown in from New York and $500,000 worth of bubbly imported from a Lisbon restaurateur. There was decadence enough for Isabel to earn the nickname “the Princess.”

During Isabel’s upbringing the Angola economy sputtered, crippled by two factors: ongoing civil war and Dos Santos’ socialist policies. “In the 1980s you’d go to the supermarket and there would only be noodles on the shelves. There wasn’t much there,” says University of Southern California associate professor emeritus Gerald Bender, who’s been studying Angola since 1968. For cloistered Isabel that reality was likely invisible; she eventually attended King’s College in London, where her mother, now a British citizen, lives, and earned an undergraduate degree in engineering.

However, as civil war resumed by the end of 1992, Isabel left for Angola’s capital city, Luanda, in a rush, allegedly after receiving death threats in London.

By the late 1990s, when the civil war was winding down –a ceasefire was formally declared in 2002–President Dos Santos, like the Soviets he had studied under in the 1960s, was embracing a grab-what-you-can form of capitalism. Over the past decade Angola has been one of the world’s fastest-growing economies. GDP grew at an 11.6% annual clip from 2002 to 2011, driven by a more than doubling of oil production to 1.8 million barrels a day. The government budget sits at $69 billion, up from $6.3 billion a decade ago.

But predictably, precious little of the windfall has made it to the people. Some 70% of Angolans live on less than $2 a day. And by the government’s own count, 10% of the country’s population is scrambling for food due to drought and bureaucratic neglect. So where’s the money going? Start with a paranoid president-for-life. The state security apparatus sucks more funds from the budget than health care, education and agriculture combined. A lot is clearly stolen: Between 2007 and 2010 at least $32 billion of oil revenue went missing from the federal ledger, according to the International Monetary Fund, which later tracked most of the money to “quasi-fiscal operations.” Angola comes in at 157 out of 176 nations ranked by Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index. It trails shining stalwarts of participatory democracy such as Yemen and Kyrgyzstan. And it’s within this environment that Isabel dos Santos has surfaced with an estimated net worth of $3 billion.

One of the biggest female Dancehall acts in Africa, Kaakie has made quite an impression on the international scene, scooping four major awards in the space of just two years. She picked up "Best New Artiste 2012" from Yfm 107.9 Ghana, "New Artiste of the Year" at Ghana Music Awards 2013, the "Reggae/Dancehall Song of the Year" award at the Ghana Music Awards 2013 and "Best Female Vocalist" at the recently-held 2013 BASS Awards.

Her subsequent debut single, “Ewoo”, topped nearly every chart in Ghana less than a month after it was released. Her second single, “Too Much”, gained her international prominence in Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, the UK, Germany, Sweden and Canada.

Her debut album will drop in September 2013 and she’s currently busy with a nationwide “KaakIt Up” tour, running alongside her Maternal Mortality Awareness Campaign, a cause close to her heart thanks to her background in nursing.

Don’t miss Kaakie on Big Brother: The Chase this Sunday – and don’t forget to vote! Your vote could keep your favourite in the game, with less than two weeks before the continent finds out who will take home the USD 300 000 prize. T.B. JOSHUA RECEIVES AMBASSADOR OF PEACE AWARD

Prophet T.B Joshua
The Arewa Youth Form, Northern Nigeria came to The SCOAN to present Prophet T.B. Joshua with a prestigious merit award as an Ambassador of Peace.

National Director of Public Affairs, Arewa Youth Forum, Benue, Nigeria, Bello Abdulhamid, said they came to The SCOAN because of love which the man of God has always demonstrated irrespective of barriers of race, religion, creed or ethnicity. Speaking on behalf of the northern states of Nigeria, he said that Kaduna, Yobe, Plateau, Kano and Jigawa States are all beneficiaries of the trailers of rice that Prophet T.B. Joshua sends.
He said, “Prophet T.B. Joshua is a man with phenomenal vision. He shows a deep sense of compassion and unconditional love. Prophet T.B. Joshua is a blessing not only to us in Nigeria but also the international community. Prophet T.B. Joshua is the very first man of God that we are visiting and honouring. Our independent assessment has shown that The SCOAN has been committed to provide not only for the spiritual but also for the physical wellbeing of people”.
Addressing his nation, he said, “Fellow Nigerians, we are here because of the love we see in the life of Prophet T.B. Joshua. We need love to come together as a nation. Where there is love, there is no killing, stealing or destruction. Where there is love, there is no segregation. Love is the solution to our problems in Nigeria”.
Explaining the reason why The Arewa Youth Forum chose to come to The SCOAN, he said that they are looking for men and women of love for consultation for the way out for this country.
The National President of the Arewa Youth Forum, Alhaji Ibrahim Gambo, said that they have picked Prophet T.B. Joshua as a leader to bring back the lost love in Nigeria.
Isa Kurgui, the National Vice President, North-Central, Arewa Youth Forum said that in a society where there is love, you can sleep without locking your door, you can go anywhere without fear. He concluded by saying that from this day henceforth, Prophet T.B. Joshua is the Grand Patron of Northern Nigerian Youths.
The congregation rose to their feet clapping as Prophet T.B. Joshua was presented with the award as Philanthropist Par Excellence Ambassador of Peace.

Standing side by side with them, the Prophet explained to the world his reason for accepting this award during the live service. He said, “I will receive this award in order to join them to bring peace to some troubled spots in our nation, Nigeria”.

THEODORA IBEKWE AT “LABO” PREMIERE IN LONDON.

The stars were out in force for the latest Nollywood movie premiere, Labo...life is a journey....

Actress, Theodora Ibekwe looked fabulous, as always, in a Desiri Couture design - a v-neck, off  shoulder tulle dress, in nude gold duchess satin, featuring embroidered details on epaulette/ waist and sheer illusion and makeup by Libeks beauty consultant.

Theodora hit the red carpet and was surrounded by the paparazzi, all calling for her to pose for their camera while the TV film crew waited patiently to grab an interview.

Theodora, who most regard as a UK Nollywood ambassador, probably the best female Nigerian film producer in the UK, smiled as she posed with most of her fans and fellow actresses.

Theodora, fresh from the successful premiere of her first production, Shameful Deceit has recently been nominated for a NUBAA (Nigeria UK Based Achiever's Award 2013), under the category of IrokoTV UK based female actress award, 2013 http://nubaa.org.uk/votes.html.

Sources have revealed that Theodora's cameo in the film, Labo, was one of the best performances.

Congratulations to the cast and crew of Labo.
